Many suppliers discover an error in tax rate, item quantity, or buyer GSTIN right after creating an e-invoice. When they log back into the e-invoice portal, they find no edit button or revision option anywhere on the dashboard.
Why an e-invoice cannot be edited on the IRP
Under Rule 48(4) of the CGST Rules, notified taxpayers must prepare invoices by uploading JSON details to the Common GST Electronic Portal to obtain an IRN. As confirmed in the NIC e-Invoice system FAQ, once an IRN is generated for an invoice, it cannot be modified or deleted on the IRP.
The IRP signs each payload cryptographically and assigns a unique 64-character hash. Because this hash is computed from core document fields including document number, financial year, and supplier GSTIN, the system does not allow partial modifications.
Common mistake: Attempting to upload an edited JSON with the exact same invoice number triggers error code 2150 ("Duplicate IRN"). Even if you cancel the IRN, error code 2278 blocks re-registering the same document number. Always issue a fresh invoice with a new serial number.
Option 1: Cancel the IRN within 24 hours
If you identify the error quickly, the e-invoice portal permits full cancellation within a strict 24-hour window from the exact timestamp of IRN generation. For details on portal steps and time limits, review our guide on e-invoice cancellation 24 hours deadline portal rules.
- Cancel the active e-way bill first: If an e-way bill was generated with the IRN, cancel the e-way bill before attempting IRN cancellation. Otherwise, the portal raises error code 2230.
- Cancel on IRP: Navigate to e-Invoice → Cancel, enter the Ack No or IRN, select the cancellation reason, and submit.
- Issue a new invoice: Generate a completely new tax invoice with a distinct serial number in your billing software, then push it to the IRP for a fresh IRN.
Option 2: Adjust via credit note under Section 34
When the 24-hour cancellation window expires, the e-invoice remains permanently recorded on the IRP. The statutory mechanism to adjust excess value, wrong rates, or returned goods is issuing a credit note under Section 34 of the CGST Act.
Notified businesses must also generate an IRN for B2B credit notes under Rule 48(4). The credit note details then flow into Table 9B of Form GSTR-1, reducing outward tax liability and communicating the downward adjustment to the buyer in their GSTR-2B.
Option 3: Edit the auto-populated entry in Form GSTR-1
According to the GSTN GSTR-1 FAQ on e-invoice auto-population, data from the IRP auto-populates into tables 4A, 4B, 4C, 6B, and 6C (B2B supplies). However, this auto-populated data is not locked permanently before filing.
Before you file your monthly or quarterly GSTR-1, you can manually modify or delete the auto-populated record in the GSTR-1 dashboard:
- Log in to the GST Portal and go to Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard.
- Select the relevant financial year and return period, then click Search.
- Open the Form GSTR-1 tile and click Prepare Online.
- Open Table 4A (B2B Invoices), locate the auto-populated invoice, and click Edit or Delete.
- If amending values or tax rates, correct the taxable value and tax amounts, then save the record.
Reconciliation warning: Editing or deleting an e-invoice in GSTR-1 creates a permanent mismatch between the IRP master data and your filed return. Tax officers frequently check differences between IRP records and GSTR-1 via back-office comparison reports. Whenever possible, keep the original invoice in GSTR-1 and issue a formal credit note instead of manually overriding the auto-populated row.
Worked example: Correcting an excess invoice value
Consider a practical scenario where Bharat Engineering Ltd issued an e-invoice with excess taxable value and failed to cancel within 24 hours.
| Document | Invoice date | Taxable value | CGST (9%) | SGST (9%) | Total invoice value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original e-invoice (INV-841) | 12 October 2026 | ₹1,50,000 | ₹13,500 | ₹13,500 | ₹1,77,000 |
| Correct agreed supply | 12 October 2026 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹10,800 | ₹1,41,600 |
| Credit note issued (CN-052) | 15 October 2026 | ₹30,000 | ₹2,700 | ₹2,700 | ₹35,400 |
| Net reported in GSTR-1 / 3B | October 2026 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹10,800 | ₹10,800 | ₹1,41,600 |
Calculation formula for the adjustment: Excess Taxable Value = ₹1,50,000 − ₹1,20,000 = ₹30,000. Output tax reduction = ₹30,000 × 18% = ₹5,400 (₹2,700 CGST + ₹2,700 SGST). Both INV-841 and CN-052 carry valid IRNs, keeping your books, IRP logs, and GSTR-1 fully aligned.
Frequently asked questions
Can an e-invoice be amended directly on the IRP portal?
No. Once an IRN is generated on the Invoice Registration Portal, it cannot be modified or deleted on the IRP.
Can I re-use the same invoice number after cancelling an IRN?
No. Under the e-invoicing system, once an IRN is generated and cancelled for a document number, duplicate IRN generation for the same document number is blocked.
How do I correct an e-invoice if 24 hours have passed?
If the 24-hour cancellation window has passed, you must either issue a credit note under Section 34 of the CGST Act or modify the auto-populated record in Form GSTR-1 on the GST portal before filing.
