A typographical error in an outward invoice number or recipient GSTIN can disrupt input tax credit for your customers. When you file Form GSTR-1 with an incorrect recipient GSTIN, the invoice populates into the wrong business entity's return, while your genuine buyer sees zero credit in their auto-generated statement. Under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act, a recipient can claim input tax credit only if the supplier furnishes the invoice details in Form GSTR-1 and those details are communicated in Form GSTR-2B. Understanding how GSTR-1 tables feed GSTR-2B helps pinpoint why immediate correction is required.
How to correct the recipient GSTIN in Form GSTR-1 Table 9A
Once you file Form GSTR-1 for a tax period, you cannot edit the filed form directly. However, the GST portal provides Table 9A specifically to amend details of outward supplies to registered persons of earlier tax periods. According to the official GSTN manual on Form GSTR-1, Table 9A (Amended B2B Invoice) allows suppliers to amend details of earlier periods, including the recipient GSTIN.
- Log in to the GST portal: Navigate to Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard. Select the financial year and the subsequent return period in which you want to make the correction.
- Open Table 9A: Select Form GSTR-1, locate the tile named Table 9A - Amended B2B Invoice, and click it.
- Search the original invoice: Select the financial year in which the original invoice was reported, enter the original invoice number, and click Amend Record.
- Enter the correct GSTIN: The portal loads the original invoice fields. In the Receiver GSTIN field, overwrite the wrong GSTIN with the correct GSTIN of your actual buyer. Verify that the legal and trade names update accordingly.
- Confirm taxable value and tax: Ensure the taxable value, place of supply, and tax rates match your original tax invoice. Click Save.
- File the return: Generate the summary, verify the details, and file the Form GSTR-1 return using an EVC or DSC.
Common mistake: Do not issue a fresh B2B invoice in Table 4A with a new number while leaving the old invoice unamended. Issuing a duplicate invoice doubles your outward tax liability in Form GSTR-3B without reversing the credit incorrectly passed to the third party.
Correction via Form GSTR-1A before filing Form GSTR-3B
If you discover the mistake in the same tax period right after filing Form GSTR-1 but before filing Form GSTR-3B, you do not have to wait for the next month. As established by the official GSTN FAQs on Form GSTR-1A, taxpayers can amend or add supply records of the current tax period through Form GSTR-1A after filing Form GSTR-1 and before filing Form GSTR-3B. Using Form GSTR-1A updates your liability and adjusts the recipient's statement without waiting for the next return cycle.
Impact on both buyers in Form GSTR-2B
Correcting the recipient GSTIN in Table 9A simultaneously resolves the issue for both parties involved:
- For the wrong buyer: The invoice is removed or adjusted downwards in their input tax credit statement. If the incorrect buyer had already taken credit, they must reverse it to prevent demands under Rule 88C or scrutiny notices.
- For the actual buyer: The amended invoice is communicated to the actual recipient and appears in their auto-generated Form GSTR-2B for the tax period in which the amendment is filed. The actual buyer can then claim input tax credit in Form GSTR-3B.
Statutory time limit under Section 37(3)
Amendments cannot be made indefinitely. Under Section 37(3) of the CGST Act, no rectification of error or omission in respect of the details furnished under Section 37(1) is allowed after the thirtieth day of November following the end of the financial year to which such details pertain, or furnishing of the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. In addition, under Section 37(4), a taxpayer cannot file Form GSTR-1 if the return for any previous tax period has not been furnished.
Worked example: correcting invoice INV-204
Consider Alpha Traders (Maharashtra), who issued invoice INV-204 dated 15 May 2026 to Beta Enterprises (GSTIN 27AAAAA1111A1Z1). During return filing for May 2026, Alpha Traders mistakenly entered Gamma Ltd's GSTIN (27BBBBB2222B1Z2) in Form GSTR-1 Table 4A.
Calculation of tax and invoice values:
- Taxable value: ₹1,00,000
- CGST @ 9%: ₹9,000
- SGST @ 9%: ₹9,000
- Total invoice value: ₹1,18,000 (₹1,00,000 + ₹9,000 + ₹9,000)
| Stage | Reported GSTIN | Taxable value | CGST (9%) | SGST (9%) | Impact on GSTR-2B |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| May 2026 (Original Table 4A) | 27BBBBB2222B1Z2 (Wrong) | ₹1,00,000 | ₹9,000 | ₹9,000 | Credit wrongly passed to Gamma Ltd |
| June 2026 (Table 9A Amendment) | 27AAAAA1111A1Z1 (Correct) | ₹1,00,000 | ₹9,000 | ₹9,000 | Credit reflected in Beta Enterprises 2B |
In the June 2026 Form GSTR-1 return, Alpha Traders navigated to Table 9A, referenced the original May 2026 return and invoice number INV-204, and replaced the receiver GSTIN with 27AAAAA1111A1Z1. Upon filing, Beta Enterprises received the ₹18,000 total tax credit in their June 2026 Form GSTR-2B statement.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change the recipient GSTIN directly in Table 9A?
Yes. In Table 9A of Form GSTR-1, you select the original financial year and enter the original invoice number. The portal allows you to edit the recipient GSTIN field to the correct buyer GSTIN.
What happens to the wrong buyer whose GSTIN was wrongly reported?
When you file Table 9A with the correct GSTIN, the portal adjusts the entry. In the current GST framework, the wrong buyer sees the tax credit removed or reversed, and the actual buyer receives the tax credit in their next generated Form GSTR-2B.
What is the time limit for amending a wrong GSTIN in Form GSTR-1?
Under the proviso to Section 37(3) of the CGST Act, rectifications are allowed up to 30 November following the end of the financial year to which the invoice pertains, or the actual date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier.
