IMS action on amended invoices: how supplier GSTR-1A changes reset your GSTR-2B

When a supplier amends an invoice through Form GSTR-1A or a subsequent Form GSTR-1, the amended document arrives in your Invoice Management System (IMS) as a new record. This amendment resets any previous Accept, Reject, or Pending decision taken on the original invoice. To reflect the corrected input tax credit in Form GSTR-3B, you must review the amended record in IMS and recompute your Form GSTR-2B.

During monthly reconciliation between the 14th and the 20th, many accounts teams accept an inward invoice on the IMS dashboard as soon as Form GSTR-2B generates on the 14th. However, if your supplier subsequently discovers an error in taxable value, GST rate, or invoice number, they can file Form GSTR-1A before submitting their Form GSTR-3B. This mid-cycle correction directly changes your inward credit ledger.

The statutory mechanism: Rule 59(4A) and Rule 60(7)

Under Rule 59(4A) of the CGST Rules, registered suppliers are permitted to add or amend outward supply details through Form GSTR-1A after filing Form GSTR-1, up to the filing of Form GSTR-3B for that same tax period. For a practical walkthrough of how vendors use this window, read our guide on GSTR-1A correction facility practical filing.

Once the supplier submits Form GSTR-1A, the amendment details are communicated to the recipient through the Invoice Management System under Rule 60(7) of the CGST Rules. According to the official GSTN FAQ on IMS, any amendment filed by a supplier creates a fresh line item in the recipient IMS dashboard. This new record supersedes the original invoice data and requires a fresh action from the buyer.

Common mistake: Assuming an accepted invoice stays accepted after an amendment. When a vendor files an amendment in GSTR-1A, the portal resets your earlier action. If you do not verify the amended values, the record will either become deemed accepted with incorrect figures or leave your return unreconciled.

What happens to earlier IMS actions when an invoice is amended?

The Invoice Management System treats each amendment as a distinct transaction event. The system handles earlier recipient actions through three core rules:

  1. Earlier acceptance is cleared: If you accepted the original invoice on the 14th, the arrival of a GSTR-1A amendment resets the status. The amended document appears with an active prompt for action.
  2. Earlier rejection is superseded: If you rejected the original invoice because of an incorrect tax rate, the supplier amendment in GSTR-1A presents the corrected values. You must evaluate the new record and choose Accept, Reject, or Pending.
  3. Deemed acceptance applies if neglected: If the recipient takes no action on the amended record before filing Form GSTR-3B, the amended invoice is deemed accepted by default under the general IMS framework.

For more details on managing deferred decisions without accidental deemed acceptance, refer to our article on IMS pending action carry forward rules.

Statutory condition for credit: Under Section 16(2)(aa) of the CGST Act read with Rule 36(4), input tax credit can only be availed if the outward supply details have been furnished by the supplier and communicated to the recipient in Form GSTR-2B. An un-recomputed amendment will not reflect in your return.

Worked example: upward amendment in GSTR-1A

Consider an engineering firm, Apex Precision Works in Maharashtra, purchasing industrial tooling from Sterling Tools Ltd in Gujarat. In their initial Form GSTR-1 filed on 10 November 2026, Sterling Tools reported an invoice with a taxable value of ₹1,00,000 and 18% IGST of ₹18,000. On 14 November 2026, Apex Precision Works saw this in GSTR-2B and accepted it in IMS.

On 16 November 2026, Sterling Tools realised the actual billing was ₹1,50,000 plus ₹27,000 IGST. The vendor filed Form GSTR-1A on 16 November 2026 to report the upward amendment before submitting their Form GSTR-3B.

Document stage Taxable value IGST (18%) IMS status Form GSTR-2B credit
Original GSTR-1 (10 Nov) ₹1,00,000 ₹18,000 Accepted (14 Nov) ₹18,000
Supplier GSTR-1A (16 Nov) ₹1,50,000 ₹27,000 Status reset to Pending review ₹18,000 (before recomputation)
Recipient action & recompute ₹1,50,000 ₹27,000 Accepted amendment ₹27,000 (updated GSTR-2B)

In this scenario, if Apex Precision Works files Form GSTR-3B without recomputing Form GSTR-2B, Table 4(A)(5) will only populate ₹18,000 instead of the full ₹27,000. Conversely, manually typing ₹27,000 without recomputing GSTR-2B causes an upward edit in Table 4A, highlighting the tile in red and raising the risk of a mismatch intimation under Rule 88D in Form DRC-01C.

Recipient workflow: taking action and recomputing GSTR-2B

To safely capture supplier amendments made through Form GSTR-1A before filing your monthly return, follow this sequence on the GST portal:

  1. Check IMS dashboard alerts: Log in to the GST portal and open Services → Returns → Invoice Management System (IMS) Dashboard. Look for records marked as amended by supplier.
  2. Review amended fields: Compare the taxable value, tax amounts, and Place of Supply against your internal purchase invoice in your accounting software.
  3. Select action: Click Accept if the figures match your books. If the supplier made an erroneous upward or downward change, click Reject or Pending.
  4. Save decision: Click Save on the IMS dashboard.
  5. Trigger recomputation: Navigate to the GSTR-2B dashboard and click Recompute GSTR-2B. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for the GSTN server queue to process the updated statement.
  6. Verify Table 4(A)(5): Open Form GSTR-3B and confirm that the auto-drafted figures match your recomputed statement.
Supplier files GSTR-1A → IMS resets action → Recipient accepts amended invoice → Recompute GSTR-2B → Form GSTR-3B Table 4(A)(5) auto-populates

For a detailed breakdown of server processing queues, error messages, and timing cutoffs during recomputation, consult our technical walkthrough on IMS reset action and recompute 2B workflow.

Downward amendments and ITC reduction risks

A supplier downward amendment presents particular financial risk. If a supplier files Form GSTR-1A reducing an invoice from ₹1,00,000 to ₹60,000, accepting this record reduces your eligible credit by ₹7,200 (at 18%). If your purchase register proves you paid for the full ₹1,00,000 supply, accepting the amendment forfeits valid input tax credit.

In cases of disputed downward amendments, the recipient should mark the record as Rejected or Pending in IMS. Rejecting the amendment keeps the earlier accepted record active or prompts the vendor to correct their figures in the following tax period.

Frequently asked questions

What happens in IMS when a supplier amends an invoice via GSTR-1A?

When a supplier files an amendment through Form GSTR-1A or a subsequent GSTR-1, the amended document flows into IMS as a fresh record. This amendment resets any previous Accept, Reject, or Pending action taken on the original invoice, requiring the recipient to take a fresh decision on the updated values.

If I already accepted an invoice, can the supplier still amend it in GSTR-1A?

Yes. A supplier can file an amendment in Form GSTR-1A before filing Form GSTR-3B for that tax period. However, once filed by the supplier, the amended record lands in your IMS dashboard, overwriting the earlier acceptance status until you actively review and act on the amended entry.

What happens if I take no action on an amended invoice in IMS?

Under the IMS operating framework, if no explicit action is taken on an amended outward supply document by the time Form GSTR-3B is filed, the system treats the amended invoice as deemed accepted, pulling the updated tax values into your final GSTR-2B calculation.

Do I have to recompute GSTR-2B after taking action on an amended invoice?

Yes. If an amendment is accepted or rejected after the initial draft GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th of the month, you must click the Recompute GSTR-2B button on the portal to refresh the auto-populated figures in Table 4 of Form GSTR-3B.
