Accounts teams face pressure between the 14th and the 20th to match their purchase register with portal data. This short window exists because you must wait for the portal to generate your GSTR-2B statement to calculate tax liability. Professionals call this generation event the freeze date.
What the GSTR-2B freeze date means
The GST portal compiles data from GSTR-1 and Invoice Furnishing Facility forms submitted by suppliers. According to the GSTN GSTR-2B FAQ, the portal generates GSTR-2B on the 14th of every month. The filing cut-off for suppliers is the 11th for GSTR-1 and the 13th for IFF.
Once the 14th arrives, the statement is frozen. Any invoice uploaded by a supplier after this cut-off will not appear in the current month's GSTR-2B. It will roll over to the next month instead.
Why this date dictates your ITC
Under Rule 36(4) of the CGST Rules, you are barred from claiming Input Tax Credit unless the supplier furnishes the invoice details and they are communicated to you in GSTR-2B. The old provisional ITC buffer no longer exists.
Claiming excess ITC: If you claim ITC in GSTR-3B that exceeds your frozen GSTR-2B limit, you will receive an automatic intimation in Form DRC-01C. You then have seven days to pay the difference or explain the mismatch.
The Invoice Management System adds another step. While the initial GSTR-2B generates on the 14th, you can now accept, reject, or keep records pending on the IMS dashboard. Rejected or pending records are excluded from your ITC. You can recompute your GSTR-2B after taking actions and before filing GSTR-3B.
Worked example
A business purchased goods worth ₹1,00,000 plus ₹18,000 GST from two suppliers in September 2026. On 15 October, the accountant opened the portal to match invoices against GSTR-2B.
| Invoice | Supplier filed | In books | In GSTR-2B (14 Oct) | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| INV-101 | 10 October | ₹9,000 | ₹9,000 | Matched |
| INV-205 | 15 October | ₹9,000 | Nil | ITC blocked |
Because the second supplier missed the filing deadline, INV-205 does not make it into the frozen statement on the 14th. The buyer must pay ₹9,000 in cash this month and wait for the invoice to appear in the October GSTR-2B generated on 14 November.
How to handle missing invoices
The only solution for invoices missing from your frozen statement is to contact the supplier. You can send a polite reminder urging them to file their pending returns.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if a supplier files GSTR-1 after the freeze date?
If a supplier files their return after the 11th, the invoice misses the current month's freeze. It will appear in your GSTR-2B generated on the 14th of the following month.
Can I claim ITC if the invoice is missing on the freeze date?
No. You cannot claim ITC unless the invoice is communicated to you in GSTR-2B. You must wait for the supplier to file and for the invoice to reflect in a future month.
