TallyPrime's built-in GSTR-2B reconciliation or a free browser tool: which should you use?

If your books are in TallyPrime, use its built-in GSTR-2B Reconciliation: it works on the vouchers you already have, can download GSTR-2B from the portal, and lets you fix a voucher from the report itself. Use gstr2bmatch.in when your accounts are not in Tally, when you are on an older release (Tally's help page is tagged Release 5.0 and gives different steps for TallyPrime 4.1 and earlier), or when you want a second, plain-language read of the same month with a rupee total of ITC at risk. It does not write anything back to Tally.

Tally is the accounting software many of our readers already use, so the honest question is not “Tally or us” but “do I need anything beyond what Tally has?” Every statement about Tally below comes from Tally's own pages, listed at the end and read on 1 Oct 2026. Every statement about our tool is what it does today. We quote no prices, because the help page gives none.

What TallyPrime's built-in reconciliation does

Tally's help page, Reconcile GSTR-2B Data in TallyPrime (last updated 15 September 2026 when we checked on 1 Oct 2026), describes this flow:

  • Get the GSTR-2B. Either download it from the portal inside TallyPrime (Alt+Z, All GST Options, Download GST Returns, then log in with your GST username and the OTP; the page says the session is valid for six hours), or import the Excel or JSON file you downloaded yourself (Alt+O, GST Returns).
  • Open the report. Alt+G, then GSTR-2B Reconciliation. Pending items are highlighted in amber and portal values in blue.
  • Read the statuses. Reconciled, Unreconciled, Mismatched, Available Only in Books, Available Only on Portal, Mismatch in Return Period, Excluded but available on Portal, Uncertain Transactions, and Invoices Rejected in IMS.
  • Resolve potential matches. These are transactions where taxable amount and tax agree but the Section, the party GSTIN or the document number differs.
  • Automate some of it. In company GST details you can enable auto-reconciliation for taxable amount differences, round-off values and TDS/TCS amounts.
  • Recompute GSTR-2B from Tally after IMS actions, ITC reversals or invoice changes.

With several GST registrations, the report shows them consolidated by default. Release 5.0 onwards can export the report to Excel in the old GSTR-2 format. A Tally blog post (updated 11 September 2024) describes the same feature as one-click download and reconciliation across several returns, periods and GSTINs, and its page offers a free trial.

What gstr2bmatch.in does

You add the GSTR-2B (Excel or JSON) and a purchase register (Excel or CSV), confirm the columns and run it. The report has five buckets: matched, value mismatch, in your books but missing from GSTR-2B, in GSTR-2B but not in your books, and likely IMS Pending, with rupee totals, a supplier-wise table of ITC at risk and CSV or Excel export. It does not file returns, log in to the portal, read your live IMS dashboard or reconcile GSTR-2A, and full two-way credit note matching is not built yet. For a Tally register there is no automatic column preset, so you confirm the mapping; our Tally export guide covers getting a clean file.

Worked scenario: the same month, a Tally user

A trading firm keeps its books in TallyPrime. Six purchase invoices are in the books and GSTR-2B has one more. The suppliers and figures are made up for illustration, and we have not run Tally on them: the Tally column shows where each invoice should land by the help page's own wording.

InvoiceTax in booksTax in GSTR-2BTallyPrimegstr2bmatch.in
Supplier A, SLP/26/0412 (2B shows SLP-26-0412)₹18,000₹18,000Reconciled, or a potential match excluding Doc No., fixed with Alt+WA: matched
Supplier B, BKT-2201₹27,000₹27,000ReconciledA: matched
Supplier C, RE-1108: books CGST ₹4,500 + SGST ₹4,500; 2B IGST ₹9,000₹9,000₹9,000Not described on the help pageB: tax head mismatch (IGST vs CGST+SGST)
Supplier D, DE-3344₹5,400₹5,940Mismatched; review and update booksB: tax amount mismatch, difference ₹540
Supplier B, BKT-2230 (B's other invoice above is in 2B)₹11,340-Available Only in BooksE: likely IMS Pending
Supplier F, MPW/0094/25 (F is not in 2B at all)₹9,720-Available Only in BooksC: missing from 2B
Supplier G, GTC/26/0217-₹3,600Available Only on Portal; record it in booksD: only in 2B

Tax in the six book invoices is ₹80,460 (18,000 + 27,000 + 9,000 + 5,400 + 11,340 + 9,720). Tax in GSTR-2B for the four invoices found in both files plus the extra one is ₹63,540 (18,000 + 27,000 + 9,000 + 5,940 + 3,600). The gap of ₹16,920 is ₹21,060 not in 2B (11,340 + 9,720), less ₹540 where 2B is higher, less ₹3,600 only in 2B.

In Tally the firm works down the statuses and fixes vouchers where they sit: the document number for supplier A, the amount for D, a new entry for G. Tally's reconciliation status list has an entry for Rejected IMS invoices but none for Pending ones; the firm would look for supplier B's invoice BKT-2230 in Tally's separate IMS Inward Supplies report, set an action status there, and recompute GSTR-2B from Tally after acting. In our tool the same file ends with two totals, ₹21,060 of ITC at risk and ₹11,340 of it likely IMS Pending, plus a supplier list to chase. The Pending label is an inference: GSTN's FAQ says Pending records do not become part of GSTR-2B, but a supplier who filed late also leaves an invoice out. The corrections themselves still happen in Tally.

When the other tool is the better choice

These are the cases where TallyPrime's built-in reconciliation is the stronger pick.

  • You already work inside Tally. It reads the vouchers you have, so there is no export, no column mapping and no second file to keep in step. Everything stays in one place.
  • You want to fix the voucher from the report. Setting an effective date, copying the portal's document number and date, changing a voucher type to Credit Note and correcting a party GSTIN are all actions on the help page. Ours is read-only.
  • You want direct download. Tally can fetch GSTR-2B for you after you log in from Tally; with us you download and upload each month.
  • You run several registrations. Tally consolidates them by default; we handle one pair of files at a time.
  • You want auto-reconcile rules for taxable amount, round-off or TDS/TCS differences. We do not compare taxable value, and our tolerance is a fixed one rupee on tax.
  • You use IMS from inside Tally. Tally's IMS Inward Supplies report shows invoices as Accepted, Rejected or Pending and lets you set the action status; our tool cannot read or change IMS at all.

Where a browser tool earns its place: your accounts are in Zoho Books, Busy, Marg or Excel, you serve clients on different software, or you want a plain second read with a rupee total before you file. Our Tally Prime guide and Tally export guide show how a Tally user can do that, and the software types guide and free tool checklist help you judge either. Frequently asked questions

Can TallyPrime reconcile GSTR-2B without any other tool?

Yes. Tally's help page says you can download or import GSTR-2B data in TallyPrime, reconcile it with your books, and resolve differences in values, return periods and document numbers. The page is tagged Release 5.0 and gives different steps for TallyPrime 4.1 and earlier.

Can I use gstr2bmatch.in if my accounts are in Tally?

Yes. Export the purchase register to Excel, add the GSTR-2B Excel or JSON from the portal, and confirm the columns in the mapper. There is no automatic Tally preset yet, unlike Zoho Books and Busy, and nothing flows back into Tally, so you make corrections in Tally yourself.

Does Tally show IMS Pending invoices?

Yes, in its IMS Inward Supplies report. Tally's help says that after you download invoices using the Invoice Management System, the report has an Action View with Accepted, Rejected and Pending groups, and you can set the action status from it. The GSTR-2B reconciliation page's own status list has an Invoices Rejected in IMS entry and no Pending entry. gstr2bmatch.in cannot read IMS. It flags a Likely IMS Pending bucket as an inference when the supplier appears in your GSTR-2B but the invoice does not, so confirm in Tally's IMS report or on the IMS dashboard. GSTN's FAQ says Pending records do not become part of GSTR-2B.

What does Tally's reconciliation cost compared with gstr2bmatch.in?

Tally's help page does not state a price, so check Tally's own pricing page; its site offers a free trial. gstr2bmatch.in is free and needs no account.

Are my files uploaded when I use gstr2bmatch.in?

Your GSTR-2B and purchase register files are read in your browser and never uploaded to any server.
